The annual Sidney Sussex Fellows
versus Staff Cricket Match is a tense battle between two finely poised
sides. This year, captain of the Fellows 1st XI, Dr Jonathan Conlin,
drilled his team to within an inch of perfection in a series of gruelling
pre-match training sessions. Hopes were high and the Fellows went into the
match confident of bettering last year's defeat. However, it was not to
be. The Staff side were sent in to back and scored a creditable 96 runs
off 20 overs. When it was the Fellows' turn to bat, this total seemed
formidable, but not out of reach. However, in the first over, top batsman
Vice-Master James Mayall was struck by injury and had to be stretchered
from the field. Several controversial run-out decisions further whittled
down the top and middle order. Gallantly, Vice-Master Mayall again took
the crease but with Dr Jillaine Seymour acting as runner for the stricken
batsman. But the crippling injury must have taken its toll with another
quick dismissal. In the end, the Fellows were all bowled out
for 76 runs off 18 overs. Congratulations to the Staff side on another
victory.
