Oktoberfest-Munich 25/9-2/10/2002

After finishing my thesis, and just before starting a post-doc at DAMTP Cambridge, Vera (ex-Squitchey Lane housemate) invited me over to Munich to attaend Oktoberfest, along with her medical friends (me being the only fake-doctor:). I had a wonderful time, drank lots of good Bavarian beer, ate many wurst mit semmel, and tried to capture a small bit of what I saw.

Arrived safely in Munich after taking the wrong train from the Flughafen. Greeted by some lovely ladies and a hot coffee, just what I needed. A street scene of Munich outside the Rathaus. Great shop!

Dinner

Food plays an enormous part of the Sistenich family. Mrs Sistenich cooked lots of yummy food and we were well pressed to finish it all. We had some nice dinners together.

Vera (our gracious host). Mike (surpise visitor). Laura (From Melbourne). Vera, Pam, Caroline. Sally (also from Melbourne).
JP (Vera's Brother). Pam. Mike is agog at Laura. Steve. Raihan doing a Home Alone impression.
Vera and Oscar (the family dog). Smile Oscar!. The whole household and guests. Channelling the Brady Bunch.

Oktoberfest!

Oktoberfest is not just about beer. It is a big fair and fun for all the family, not just the adults:). This one of the more adventurous rides, Eurostar. Eat, Drink and be Merry. This little drummer boy has gotten lucky. Vera is bopping along to the band.
There are several gigantic beer tents, each filled with 10000 happy drinker. The funfair at night. Bavaria, the mythological heroine of said Kingdom. Looks like Vera has had one too many and picked up an extra passenger for the ride home in the taxi.

Visit Brad

Brad, friend from UWA Engineering days. Now working in Munich. Ultimate Frisbee, a cross between Frisbaee, American Football and Netball. Just an excuse for a party. Instant beach for a tropical feel. Brad was organising an informal tournament so I got to hang around and observe the proceedings. The first match was way too early in the morning:). A bit of chow.

Day Tripping

Time for a ride on a Choo Choo train. Oscar is having a great time on his day out. Going on a big boat. Feeding the seagulls.
In front of the Versailles Knock-Off. Rainbow. Up the mountain. Kampenwald The Alps.
A small Lutheran church. A nice day in the sun. Church spires in Aschau. Who said the Germans don't have a sense of fun?

Some B&W Shots

I was running out of slide film so I had to start using the one roll of black and white film I brought along with me.

We took a cable car up the mountain. We didn't quite get up to the cross, but we managed to get a picture. The ski lodge at the top. A nice tree by a brook in front of the mountains.
A nice farm. The inside of a nunnery on an island. Another view. Vera pondering Lake Prien.
Electric boats on Lake Prien. A nice pair. The brook flowing through Aschau. A fisherman.

Tech. Notes

Colour photos were taken using Fuji Sensia 400 slide film, scanned at 4000dpi 14bit/channel, cropped, colour corrected, downsized and sharpened. I used a Minolta Dynax 7 with either an AF 24-105mm/3.5-4.5 zoom lens or AF 50mm/1.4 fixed focal length lens.

The pictures taken indoors have been heavily colour corrected and so may seem unnatural. In some case, I have applied an increase in saturation.

Black and White photos were taken on Fuji Acros 100 film, processed in Microphen 21 degrees for 7mins. Scanned at 4000dpi 14bit monochrome positive, inverted equalised and curve adjustments made. Some have been masked, dodged and burned.
