Open Day Events

I regularly participate in Open Day Activities and Outreach Events.

At our last DAMTP Open Day (March 19, 2005) we used everyday articles such as laser pointers, DVDs and DIY double-slits to recreate Young's double-slit experiment and enable visitors to explore the interference phenomena associated with the wave-nature of light.

Solar cells and solar-powered toys were used to introduce the photoelectic effect, a manifestation of the particle nature of light.

The demonstrations were supplemented by simulations that allowed visitors to explore these topics further, and numerous posters, and handouts were available.

The activities were designed to stimulate discussion about quantum theory and the potential future applications of quantum technology, such as quantum computers.

If you missed the event, here are some photos:

Public Lectures

Recently I helped organize a public lecture and interview entitled From Einstein to Quantum Information by Anton Zeilinger of the University of Vienna, which proved to be very popular. Both the lecture and interview were recorded by Cambridge University Science Productions and are also available on DVD (NTSC or PAL) on request.

I also give introductory lectures to non-expert audiences myself. For instance, on Oct 3, 2005 I gave an introductory lecture on Quantum Computing in the Contemporary Topics Lecture Series aimed at first year computer science students at Cardiff University.
